Stars are singled out for celebrity news because they participate in many activities that the average person can't get away with like driving under the influence, getting arrested, cheating on a spouse, or spending time in jail. We love to watch these stars - whom we have put to on a pedestal - as being so perfect, fail right before out eyes. They not only fail they just plain explode in a matter of words.
We see these stars in a movie playing some sweet funny role or singing songs we love to hear and then bam, they get arrested or someone gets a picture of them in some adulterous affair and we love it. I think it makes us feel like we are better than them in some ways and we love that.

I think seeing celebrities fail again and again builds our own egos.
Celebrity news also deals with who is getting married to whom and charity events that celebrities create. We as a society are obsessed with these stars and want so much to be like them. They kind of represent royalty in a sense. They are people we love to worship and follow. Much like little gods for us to emulate. We love to see the cameras follow them around and see where they eat and where they shop and who they are married to today. Many people watch the celebrity news to see how to live their own lives. If there favorite star has 2 children then they want 2 children. If there favorite pop star eats at In-N-Out burger that is where they eat. We are need someone to be like and many many people choose celebrities for that person to look up to.
Much of celebrity news today even deals with what stars are wearing and how you can get the same look for less money. They will show a popular star and the outfit she or he has on and then break it down for you to buy something similar at a much cheaper price. We want so much to be them we will do whatever it takes to look just like they do.
I think another reason stars are the subject of the celebrity news is we seem to be so bored with our own lives day after day the same old things that it Is a treat to see pictures of stars at the airport and malls and other countries doing what we wish we could do. The celebrity news just gives us what we are craving for day after day, week after week.
